Why we don’t use polystyrene (Styofoam)

To ensure the best protection for our Champagne flutes we pack them in black polyurethane foam. Other manufacturers, even those of more expensive brands, cut corners and pack their champagne flutes in much cheaper stiff polystyrene, or Styrofoam as it is also known.

Why do we pack our Champagne flutes why other brands pack theirs in polystyrene (Styrofoam) ? Aside from polystyrene (Styrofoam) looking and feeling a bit tacky, there’s another disadvantage to it. A common unfortunate incident caused by the use of stiff styrofoam in packing stemware is that when the stemware is pulled out, the stems snaps or beaks. This usually happens during the excitement of receiving a brand new box of stemware. We know from  personal experience that this situation is extremely frustrating and embarrassing. We have eliminated this problem by the replacing stiff styrofoam with softer polyurethane foam.

Producing the stiff styrofoam which is used by other manufacturers is very damaging to the environment to create, because the greenhouse gas HCFC-22 is still commonly used to produce it. This is another reason why our products have less environmental impact that other brands.

In short, we use polyurethane because 1) it looks and feels better, 2) incidents of broken stems when unpacking them are eliminated 3) it’s friendlier to the environment.
